
NOT EVERY BAKLAVA IS ANTEP BAKLAVASI
Gaziantep Chamber of Industry (GSO) President Adnan Ünverdi underlined the cultural, economic and symbolic importance of Antep Baklavası, reminding that it is Türkiye’s first product to be granted geographical indication by the European Union. “Let us remember: not every baklava is Antep Baklavası,” he said.
Gaziantep Chamber of Industry (GSO) Chairman Adnan Ünverdi emphasized that Antep Baklavası is more than a dessert, carrying centuries of tradition, the skill of artisans, and cultural identity. “Antep Baklavası is the first Turkish product to receive EU geographical indication registration. This is not just a certificate—it is the global recognition of the effort passed from generation to generation, the skill of artisans, the finest ingredients and our unique culinary heritage,” Ünverdi noted.
He underlined that authentic Antep Baklavası reflects quality in every detail—from raw materials to production techniques, from craftsmanship to presentation. “Real Antep Baklavası can only be produced with specific standards of ingredients, by skilled masters using traditional methods that embody the spirit of Gaziantep. This geographical indication provides consumers with a guarantee of authenticity while protecting the labor of our producers,” he added.
Ünverdi also warned that products sold under the name “Antep Baklavası” in other cities mislead consumers and damage Gaziantep’s brand value. He underlined that every box of authentic Antep Baklavası must display the official logo, which proves its originality. Producers are required to register with the list maintained by the Chamber and comply with both Turkish Patent and EU certification standards. Compliance inspections are regularly carried out to safeguard the product’s integrity.
Highlighting that Antep Baklavası is one of Gaziantep’s leading export items, Ünverdi said:
“Today, Antep Baklavası is sought after worldwide and often imitated. Yet it carries the heritage of centuries, the labor of our masters, the delicacy of Gaziantep cuisine and the depth of our city’s culture. Protecting Antep Baklavası means protecting not only the future of a dessert but also our cultural identity. Both producers and consumers must preserve this heritage with awareness.”
